Meet the Bakers
Josh (J) and Marisa (M)
We started this bakery because we believe in the power of real food, made with care. We wanted to create delicious sourdough bagels that brought people joy. That’s why every bagel we make is naturally leavened with sourdough, hand-rolled, and baked fresh in small batches. No shortcuts, no mass production—just time, care, and the best ingredients we can find.
But this business is about more than just bagels. It’s about community. From the very beginning, we’ve been supported by an incredible group of people in the Santa Cruz area who believe in what we do. From pickups and deliveries to opening our very first shop in Felton–you’ve helped us grow and realize our dream. In return, we’re committed to making something that truly nourishes—both body and soul.
Whether you’re stopping by for your morning bagel or ordering for a special event, thank you for letting us be a part of your day. It means everything to us.
Our Story
Marisa (M) has always loved cooking and baking and was introduced to the art of sourdough by Heather Rodriguez who offered a class called “Sourdough Bootcamp”. With some dry starter, a mason jar, flour, water, and salt Marisa fell in love with the process and sourdough. She started with bread and then took a chance with bagels. Posting a picture of our bagels on Facebook started a frenzy! Friends offered to buy them and encouraged us to sell them, and as they say, the rest is history. J and M Bagels was born!
Marisa has nurtured multiple small businesses, including her full-time career as a private practice Marriage and Family Therapist and Relationship Coach. As J and M Sourdough Bagel’s Business Manager she oversees operations and is in charge of creating the systems behind the product and the marketing. She also makes the schmears!
Josh (J) has been a Commercial Fisherman for 10 years. As some of you may know, Commercial Fishing is not only one of the most dangerous jobs, it is also a dying profession for many reasons. After talking with some people who know the “business” and seeing the true potential of our bagels, Josh decided to say goodbye to his old career and put on an apron. People ask about his history of baking. Well, Josh got his first cookbook at age 4 and makes some of the meanest BBQ around. But baking? Josh has found his creative outlet and has found what he calls his “dream job.”
We’re proud to be a part of an amazing community that has supported us from day one. When you buy a bagel from us, you’re not just getting breakfast—you’re investing in local, artisan food and helping small businesses thrive.
Thanks for your support!
